On Saturday June 15th, 2019, over 400 people gathered in the HUB Lyceum on the University of Washington Campus to celebrate the UW Dept of Earth and Space Sciences annual Graduation Ceremony, hosted by Chair Ken Creager. Receiving diplomas were 51 undergraduate students, out of a graduating class of 87. Receiving hoods were 12 out of a class of 13 Masters students, and 7 out of a class of 13 PhD students. This is one of our larger graduating classes so we again held the ceremony in the HUB Lyceum auditorium with seating for 400, as our previous locations in Johnson Hall and Bagley Hall are not adequate. In addition to the live audience, this ceremony was viewed by 70+ live videostreams to five countries around the world. A reception was held in the HUB Lobby outside the Lyceum following the ceremony.
Fire-drill at the 2019 Graduation Ceremony
We did have one somewhat abnormal surprise at the 2019 Graduation Ceremony, just as we were getting ready to start, the fire-alarm went off. No missing the loud buzzer and the flashing strobe lights, so we all took a 20 minute break outside while the Seattle Fire Dept came and gave their blessing before we could restart. Luckily ... just a false alarm.Speakers for the Graduation Ceremony of 2019
Speakers for the 2019 Graduation Ceremony included UW ESS Chair Ken
Creager, UW College of the Environment Dean Lisa Graumlich, and special

Valentine for the undergraduate students. The Graduate Student announcer

Roe.

As a special final (free!) service for our graduating students, the ESS department recorded a video of the ceremony and shot still photographs of each student receiving their diploma. The photographs can be viewed online via a web slideshow, and/or each photograph can be downloaded (click on the photo) for high quality printing or saving. (about 5 MB jpeg each). 200 photos were taken, but these were edited down to the 97 photos found in the the following gallery or slideshow. The variability in lighting on some of the later undergrad photos was due to technical issues (overheated flash & flash batteries), sorry.
